Electronic Charting
The
electronic medical records feature of the software allows for the creation of a
longitudinal clinical database. It includes the capability to automatically
transcribe medical documentation, easily guide the provider through treatment
protocols, provide tools to record and follow up orders, and maintain
medical-legal documentation. MedInformatix also has the ability to
store documents, images, X-Rays, lab data and other multimedia data from
external sources which may be imported using digital scanners, and direct file
transfer.
The
system's Encounter Flow Sheet screen displays the
Decision Tree,
which is a workflow tool used to record patient information. The tool is
called a Decision Tree because of its ability to “branch out” with a display
of options when a “decision”, or node is selected. The tree
extends further with each new option selected within the original decision
branch.
In
order to easily access and record information, sections of the Decision Tree
windows are developed specifically for different areas of staff. For
example, the front office staff has access to and will utilize the Reception
portion of the tree, while nursing staff will utilize the Nursing
portion. The Reception area provides a variety of options that include
review of patient forms, verifying insurance notes and printing
prescriptions for the patient. The Nursing portion of the tree provides
the ability to document phone triage as well as progress notes, a treatment plan
and many other options. In addition to
Decision Tree sections for each area of staff, the windows can be modified to
suit a particular medical specialty.
Double-Clicking
on any node on a tree can cause some action to happen. The action that
takes place depends on the properties assigned to the node. Selecting a node may
launch a Questionnaire Form, or a Vital Signs entry window, or an EKG display.
The designer of the Decision Tree will structure the nodes and branches of the
nodes in such a way as to mimic a natural workflow in the thought process of the
user. For example, the typical structure of the
Primary Care – Decision Tree for physician interaction is first grouped by “type
of complaint.” It is further subdivided into the main categories of
physician activity called “History,” “Examination,” “Assessment” and
“Plan.” Because the structure of the tree is familiar, the physician
usually knows what area to enter to continue documentation on the patient visit.
